On Saturday, April 17th, the 5th annual "Walk
the Line" walkathon will be held for the benefit of Southern Community Services and
the Stewartstown Family Resource Center.
Southern Community Services, located at 27 East Main
Street, New Freedom, is a non-profit outreach organization that seeks to meet basic human
needs in southern York County. Southern Community Services seeks to provide direct social
& welfare services to those in need, serve as an advocate for low/moderate income
residents, and serve as an information/referral agency.
Southern Community Services serves the unemployed,
low/moderate income citizens, and transient and stranded motorists. Persons living in the
boroughs of Glen Rock, Shrewsbury, New Freedom, Stewartstown, and Railroad are eligible
for services. Citizens of Codorus, Hopewell, and Shrewsbury townships are eligible for
services as well.
The Stewartstown Family Resource Center is a
cooperative effort of the Community Regional Task Force, Stewartstown Borough, and
Penn-Mar Organization. The Family Resource Center, located at 18 South Main Street,
Stewartstown, seeks solutions to questions facing families and individuals residing in
Southern York County.
At first contact with The Family Resource Center, a
trained Centralized Intake Worker conducts a confidential interview. During this meeting,
each person's needs are identified and referrals are made to appropriate agencies and/or
organizations.
The 5-mile walk, starting at 9:00 AM on April 17th,
will begin in New Freedom and finish in Glen Rock. Walkers who raise at least $15 in
pledges will receive a free return ride to New Freedom on the Northern Central Railway.
Following the walk, prizes will be awarded to the
top 5 pledge raisers overall, as well as the top pledge raisers in the 60+, 12 and over,
and 11 and under categories. Walkers with $25 or more in pledges will receive a
commemorative T-shirt. Co-worker, family, church, and business team competitions are also
encouraged.
