Stewartstown Senior Center
Marks 25th Anniversary!!
On Wednesday, March 24th, the
Stewartstown Area Senior Center, 1 of 16 senior centers in the county, will be celebrating
its 25th anniversary. The seniors, who like the nickname "The Golden Oldies,"
started meeting in Fellowship Hall of Stewartstown United Methodist Church 25 years ago.
Though still meeting in the same location, "home" is now a roomier addition to
the church.

Director Rosie Horton
(above) points out that membership is in excess of 100 with average daily attendance of
about 35. The center is open from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM Monday thru Friday. To participate in
the program, members must be Pennsylvania residents, or the spouse of a resident, age 60
and above and "self-sufficient" except for transportation. Rides can be arranged
for those who are interested in attending, but who lack their own transportation. There
are no membership fees to participate in the programs, but a small donation for lunch is
encouraged.
Inside activities include such things as card
games, board games, quilting, "movie day," bingo, and the KAVYS program. KAVYS
stands for Kids Are Very Young Seniors. The seniors derive a lot of personal satisfaction
from assisting 1st and 2nd grade students from Stewartstown Elementary School with
remedial reading. Likewise, the students look forward to their visits at the center. In
addition to a wealth of activities at the center, Rosie and her Assistant Director, Linda
Heffner, plan day trip activities to dinner theaters, auctions, and numerous other sites.
The York County Area Agency on Aging is the
primary source of funding for the Stewartstown Area Senior Center. The Borough and area
townships, clubs and organizations, all make donations to the center. The seniors also
conduct raffles and sell candies to help underwrite their programs. On March 22, the
seniors, in cooperation with the local Girl Scout troop, will be hosting a Fashion Bug
fashion show.
The 25th anniversary celebration, from 10:00
AM to 2:00 PM on March 24th, is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend. The
program will include guest speakers on topics of interest to seniors, musical
entertainment, lunch, and skits by members including a special visit by Sonny & Cher.
Rosie invites all area seniors to "drop
by" for a visit. Unlike the stereotypical senior "home," the Stewartstown
Area Senior Center is abuzz with activity. The center is vibrant and growing and all area
seniors are encouraged to participate.
