S.E. School District

Kennard-Dale’s Own
by Danielle Spencer

Mrs. Ruth Ann Guertin and Mrs. Patricia Pearce work in Kennard-Dale High School's Library. Both women started working in the library this year. Last year, Mrs. Pearce worked in the high school nurse's office, as an aide. Last August, she moved from the nurse's office to the library to help Mrs. Virginia Gibble, now former librarian. In November, Mrs. Guertin stepped into Mrs. Gibble's place to take over the librarian position full-time.

Mrs. Guertin has lived in the school district for 20 years. She lives in Stewartstown with her three daughters, Elizabeth, Kathleen, and Adrienne, and husband Larry, an electrical engineer. She grew up near Catonsville, Maryland and attended Western Maryland College. Her love of working with people and books led her to earn a degree in Library Science. Mrs. Guertin has worked in five different school districts before coming to South Eastern. She originally stumbled upon the job when she came into the school on an errand for one of her daughters and was asked by an administrator if she would be interested in the librarian position. Mrs. Guertin really enjoys the company of the faculty and stated that "the students and faculty here at Kennard-Dale could rival people in other school districts."

Mrs. Pearce has lived in the school district for 12 years. She lives in Rinely with her two daughters, Anne and Caroline, and husband Joe. Her family is originally from Ohio. Like Mrs. Guertin, Mrs. Pearce also enjoys working with the faculty of Kennard-Dale High School. Working in the school district gives her an opportunity to be more involved with her children--and learn more about them!

On working in the same school as their children, both say that they enjoy being a positive part of their children's lives, and feel that their daughters appreciate having a convenient mother!

Before working together, Mrs. Guertin and Mrs. Pearce had known each other through their daughters' various extra-curricular activities. On working together now, both say that they thoroughly enjoy each other's camaraderie. When Mrs. Guertin found that she was going to become librarian, she was excited to find out that she was going to be working with a friend. Both feel that working together is a fun experience!

Mrs. Guertin has many goals for Kennard-Dale's library. She is working toward a whole new collection of books, videos, newspapers and magazines, and other research material. She feels that the current material is dated and what is usable is physically worn from use. She would like to see a newer, well-rounded collection come into Kennard-Dale. For the time being, Mrs. Guertin and Mrs. Pearce will continue working with K-D's resources and enjoying improving it together.
