Stewartstown History

The Stewartstown Historical Society

The Stewartstown Historical Society was organized in 1984 and five years later became a Non-profit Corporation for Historical Research, Education and Preservation. The goals of the Society are met through public programs in the spring and fall, bus trips to historic sites, the revival of the Stewartstown Fair, and the publication of a newsletter "From The Barrens."

The Society will participate in the York County Bi-Centennial Celebration by presenting special exhibits in connection with the 1999 Fair. Stewartstown will celebrate its Sesquicentennial in 2001. Plans are underway for programs, activities, and a new pictorial history of the Borough and surrounding area. The pictorial history is expected to be published in 2001.

In July of this year, the Society will begin administration of the Cross Mill Historic Site for the County Parks Department. The Society will be offering guided tours of the Cross Mill and providing educational materials.

An important project is the search for a much-needed building to house the offices and growing collections of historic artifacts and documents.

A Board of Directors that holds monthly meetings governs the Society. Current membership in the Society is over one hundred. New members and volunteers are always welcome to help with the expanding programs.

Information on membership or other matters may be obtained by calling 993-6872 or writing The Stewartstown Historical Society at P.O. Box 82 in Stewartstown. The Society is a recognized member of the Pennsylvania Federation of Museums and Historical Organizations.
