Lions Club Honors Kennard-Dale Student, Jeremy
Keller
A Student-of-the-Month certificate was presented
to Kennard-Dale senior Jeremy Keller by the Stewartstown Lions Club at
its February 2nd dinner meeting at Hopewell United Presbyterian Church. Jeremy is the son
of Michael and Cynthia Keller of Stewartstown. He is a member of the National Honor
Society and was recently honored as Business Student of the Month. Jeremy will begin
pursuit of a degree in computer sciences at Penn State-York in the fall.
The principal address for the evening was given by
York attorney and historian Ron Hershner, who had been given a similar
student-of-the-month award by the same Lions Club twenty five years ago. Mr. Hershner used
a collection of letters written to Civil War soldier John Henry Anderson, of Hopewell
Township, to demonstrate the ambivalent feelings held by York County residents toward the
war in the 1863 to 1865 time period. J. Harvey Anderson enlisted in the Union army in 1863
at the age of 19 years. He retained many of the letters written to him by local residents
throughout his many re-enlistments. He served as part of the honor guard at the surrender
of Confederate General Joe Johnson, which effectively ended the war. Mr. Hershner came
into possession of the letters by way of his aunt, a granddaughter of J. Harvey Anderson.
They show that neither the Democrats nor Republicans were 100 percent in favor of the
fighting and talk about the hardships caused by the departure of so many men to the
service.
Mr. Hershner pointed out that three events will be
celebrated at the Hershaull Park pavilion just east of Cross Roads on July 31, 1999. First
is the centennial of the Borough of Cross Roads; second is the 50-year anniversary of the
dedication of Hershaull Park, itself; and third is the opening to the public of the
restored Cross Mill historical site. The public is invited.
